Massapequa – Berner HS Hall of Fame
Invitation to our
17th Annual Golf Outing / Induction Dinner
in honor of Berner’s 50th Anniversary
When and Where … Monday August 6, 2012
For some 15 years, we have held our outing at the Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course in Woodbury, NY. A fifteen minute drive north on the Seaford Oyster Bay Expressway, a right turn (Jericho Turnpike) and a left turn on the first northbound corner (Southwoods Rd.) is all that it takes to reach the site of our event. The Town of Oyster Bay complex is one of the nation’s finest municipal golf courses (that is challenging to a novice golfer).
The arrival time for golf is 10:30 AM and 4:30 PM for “Dinner Only” registration.
10:30 am “Sign In” and Breakfast
As you make a last left turn into the TOB Golf Course, you immediately are taken with the beauty of the former AndrewMellon family estate. After passing the 10th green and the driving range on the left, we pass the 5 par second hole tee box and turn into a long tree line drive bordering the first hole fairway. The drive leads to the Estate Manor House which was built-in the early 1900′s. With a ballroom addition, the building serves as the club house, catering hall and the Woodland’s restaurant on the second floor. A quick turn to the right leads to the golf cart area where our clubs are unloaded. After parking, we enter the club house and are greeted by the Hall of Fame Registrars.

Mike was there with the scholarship winners who volunteered to serve as spotters out on the course. MHS Volleyball Team members were on hand to sell Volleyball Tee Shirts while Gordie Dopslaff and Bill Beato catch up on the news.

11:30 AM Curtain Call @ The Cart Area
As golfers make their way to their assigned golf carts they are greeted by golf chairman Mike Hanna and Town staff members distributing ice-cold water bottles. Over the past 17 years, we cannot recall a day when we were rained out or when the temperature was under 80 degrees. The foursome photos from our files represent only a small part of the total number attending. Our participation rate ranges from 120 to 144 golfers.
After the foursome photo session is completed, golfers receive instruction about the Shot Gun format. With great anticipation in the air, the carts begin to roll to their assigned holes. Lunch on the trail is on a high ridge where some 6 holes start or end.

7:00 PM The Induction Program and Awards
For over a decade, Mike Hanna, President of the Hall of Fame, and Massapequa High School Principal James Maloney began the formal part of our program with words of welcome. Jim has retired, but continues to captain an administrator’s foursome and Dr. Barbara Williams, our current high school principal carries on the tradition.
7:10 PM Scholarship Awards
7:10 PM Scholarship Award
The first order of business is to introduce MHS Hall of Fame scholarship winners. For the past few years, the Directors have awarded 10 to 12 $2,000 scholarships to members of the graduating class. Vice President Linda Hoffman, the Chairperson of the Scholarship Committee presents the awards for the organization. 2011 honorees and past winners Kimberly Nicole Meyer, Edward Shanley & Kristen Brittany Silk are among the winners listed on our Scholarship page (link)
Scholarship sponsors John and Ellen Ames, Jerry Passman and his wife April Haskel, Bruce Anderson, tee sponsors, contributors and outing participants make the award program possible.
7:20 PM Induction of Alumni & Community Staff Candidates
Mike reviews the selection process that starts in November, when the Selection Committee narrows the extensive list of alumni candidates. In January the ballot is presented to active and retired Directors of the Hall of Fame at the Annual Organizational Meeting. The Directors vote and select up to eight alumni candidates and three Community / Staff Honorees. The candidates are notified, and the selection results are announced on the Hall’s website shortly thereafter. The process of developing resumes and obtaining photographs for the dinner program by the Program Committee is usually completed prior to the mailing of outing invitations. Our local weekly newspapers publish the material in early June.
Mike calls upon the evening induction presenters which over the years have included Bo Wernersbach, Connie Ricci, Herb Pluschau, Brian Kilmeade, Sue Woodbury and our mainstay presenters Gary Baldinger and Linda Hanna. In 2011 Director Rosemary Reilly joined the group.

The Mellon Estate Staircase
Immediately after the last Hall of Fame induction, honorees are gathered for a group photo on the Mellon Estate staircase. While the photo session is underway Chairman Hanna is finishing the evening’s program by awarding cash performance prizes to golfers. Last minute group photos are also part of the concluding moments. Mike, with retired Director Carol Hartzell, Thomas Juelke (An exceptional 13-year-old “closest to pin” winner) and Jane Kennedy, (Captain of the low scoring ladies foursome). The Men’s winning foursome were represented by Matt Burke, Malcolm Gilbert and Brian Piotrowski.
